Look Development from my first short film project StillBorn (available on amazon prime)! Working on the film's creature Jack Jack was such a pleasure and an honor. Sincerest regards to the passionate production crew, talent and everyone involved in the film's development. Presented is an overview in snippets of the character's shading development throughout production.
I learned quite a bit about authoring shading networks and handling a render engine overall in Arnold from extensive iteration and feedback. Jack Jack's texture sheet comprises of 11 UDIMs at 8k resolution textured in Adobe Substance 3D Painter; in addition, some sculptural detail touch ups were done by me in zBrush. UV Unwrapping was completed in Maya with two texture sets serving for batch renders whilst the other serving as a 2k texture preview for the character's rig. Rendered footage is at 2k anamorphic, and the shots were compiled and composited in After Effects.
Further more, I was directly responsible for constructing the character's animation rig. The rig consists of standard FK/IK chains, animatable texture sliders for the body, dynamic chain for limbs, sticky IK fingers and toes, skin bubble driven by wave deformers that can glide on the character's skin surface, auto eye lids that react to eye controls, and breathing sliders.
